5 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Sweet Potatoes



1) Sweet potatoes are actually not even part of the potato (Solanaceae) family. Instead they belong to the Convolvulaceae family which is a group of plants with trumpet shaped flowers.

2) Sweet potatoes are one of the oldest vegetables known to man. They have been consumed since prehistoric times.

3) Studies have shown that sweet potatoes may reduce the risk of various kinds of cancer including breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and kidney cancer.

4) George Washington grew sweet potatoes on his farm in Mount Vernon, Virginia.
