5 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Oregano!


1. Ancient Greeks would crown a bride and groom with oregano laurels during the ceremony because oregano was believed to banish sadness.

2. The name oregano means "joy of the mountain." It comes from the Greek "oros" meaning mountain and "ganos" meaning joy.

3. When in bloom oregano has beautiful flowers that are also edible.

4. Oregano is anti-bacterial. It can help destroy harmful bacteria, parasites, and viruses.

5. Oregano is not a particular herb but rather a particular herb flavor. There are several different kinds of plants that have this flavor and are known as oregano.

  1. Yes that's right Oregano is anti-bacterial. I use a product called wild Oil of Oregano as it is good for lung infections.

  3. It may have antibacterial properties, but in the case of a bacterial lung infection, it's not a substitute for antibiotics. People are refusing whooping cough vaccinations in the delusional belief that oregano oil is a sufficient "cure" for whooping cough, which it most definitely is not. Companies making such claims have had justifiable legal sanctions made against them for such unsubstantiated claims.

  4. Anyone using oregano oil to combat a serious bacterial lung infection is a fool. People who refuse to vaccinate their children against whooping cough because they believe oregano oil will protect them from it are also fools.
