What Are Phytonutrients?

Phytonutrients are chemical compounds that occur naturally in plants and thought to have significant health benefits. "Phyto" is the Greek word for plant. Phytonutrients are contained in fruits, vegetables, and other plant foods such as grains, nuts, and seeds. There are many different kinds of phytonutrients and scientists and nutritionists have been trying to better understand the functions and benefits of specific types. Five important types of phytonutrients are carotenoids, phytoestrogens, ellagic acid, flavonoids, and resveratrol.
