4 Reasons to Eat Strawberries

     1) Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that helps produce collagen-a protein that helps maintain the skin. It also strengthens the immune system, helps to heal cuts and wounds, and helps maintain healthy bones, teeth, gums, and blood vessels. It has been shown to protect against heart disease, stroke, cataracts, and diabetes. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant and helps the body properly use other vitamins and minerals such as folic acid and iron. Because vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, and is not stored in the body, it is important to consume vitamin C-rich foods each day.

2) Strawberries contain ellagic acid. Ellagic acid is a phytochemical that can act as an antioxidant and seems to have anti-cancer properties. Animal studies have found that ellagic acid can inhibit the growth of tumors.  It has also been thought to reduce heart disease, birth defects, and liver problems, although this has not been proven.

      3) Strawberries are loaded with antioxidants. In fact, they contain the fourth highest antioxidant level of any fruit. Antioxidants help slow aging and prevent disease by helping to protect your body from free radicals.

      4) Strawberries are sweet yet still low in fat and calories. This makes eating them a healthy and nutritional way to satisfy your sweet tooth. I especially love them with low fat frozen yogurt or added to smoothies for a delicious treat. What’s your favorite way to eat strawberries?
